Thanks, I'll bear those in mind. For the moment (ppc64) I'm trying the KISS approach - symlink "likely" binaries to -32 or -64 version at compile time, and use --sysconfdir=/etc/32 for these two apps. Probably, my approach will turn out to have more holes than a seive, all I know for certain is that firefox doesn't work (returns with status of 1 after a second or two) and that I need to rebuild it with debugging info to even begin to work out what is happening.
