Found the problem! Having pulled Clojure master and done: ant, mvn install I saw that the jar in the repository was very small - pretty much empty in fact. I manually copied the clojure-1.3.0-master-SNAPSHOT.jar to the repo and was able to mvn compile contrib just fine.
