Except for the specific driver needed to access the hard disk, kernel
modules can be loaded from any mounted location.  Not sure why it
would be searching the hard drive before the booted iso, but that
seems to be the only explanation for what you are seeing.  But isn't
this the other way around?   That is, from what you said earlier I
thought you were booting a kernel that wasn't the expected version and
must be coming from your hard drive, and then it fails to find the
matching modules.
