That's sound advice.

I purchased a Dell after some through research on linux support, reviews
and user experiences. For Dells I found a good indicator was to look
through the support bulletin boards for the laptop in question to find
any common issues.

As for Linux support, after installing Knoppix which did a good chunk of
the work, the fun parts were getting ACPI working properly, which
required a custom kernel, as well as getting the Intel wireless going
with ndiswrapper. I also spent some time getting reading up on getting
cpu throttling working to save some battery life.

In the end my only annoyance is the lack of hardware suspend to disk or
ram. I did endure a day long fight with getting suspend to disk working
with what was included in the stock kernel, but gave up as I could never
get it completely happy. Although I may have to revisit this as I see a
new version of Software Suspend is out...

Best of luck,
