Is the drive/partition that the home directory resides on full?

- From a command prompt I would run:
df -Th

If there is a partition that has 100% usage, you will potentially see
weird problems.

Also, a 4 gig HD is really small and quite old.  Are you sure that the
hard drive is in good shape (ie. have you run any disk diagnostics)?

Brand new 80 and 160 gig drives can be had for $52.95 and will perform
significantly faster than the 4 gig drive you have.
