Hi Allyson,

I had both terrible nails and bad skin problems for about a year. Be careful about catching secondary infections while your nails are like this. I got a pseudo-monas infection in my finger nails, they turned green! I also got a bad case of fungus under my toe nails and had to have two of them removed, not fun but not as bad as it sounds.

OK, here is what to do (I'm not a doctor but I pay one!). First have your doctor check your iron levels. Low iron causes dry, cracked skin. Add iron ONLY if your doctor says to and will monitor your iron levels.

If you do get a fungus in your nails my primary care doctor told me about a home remedy, after months of prescription treatments, that finally worked. Soak your nails for ten minutes in 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water. Due this daily for two weeks.

Another discovery that I stumbled onto, confirmed by my dermatologist, is Flaxseed oil. Begin with one 1,000 mg softgel daily. If you can tolerate it... you may have a loose stool, increase to 2,000 mg daily and then 3,000 mg daily. This has helped my skin tremendously plus the Omega 3 fatty acid is great for my lipid levels.

Good luck and hang in there!

My lips were pretty bad too, but I bought some stuff at different make-up counters and they all seemed to help.  Being a woman with chapped lips is ok b/c there are so many prodcuts.....
