Here in Vermont the EDL adds an additional $25 to the price of a
regular drivers license.

crossing a bit easier. It is introducing the Enhanced Driver's
License (EDL) Which will allow you to cross between the uS and
Canada without a passport. It's already enacted in NY, Michigan,
Vermont and Washington. Other states (Ohio, Minn, ND, Idaho, NH,
and Maine) are in the process of developing their own EDL
programs. You will still be required to follow the standard
procedure check in.
