I have found two of the same sized allen wrenches to be a really effective
alternative to a spanner.  Choose the size of allen wrench that fits the
holes tightly.  Short legs in the holes, long legs together and resting on
the opposite short leg.  Wire tire together for added stability.  Add a
long screwdriver or other pry instrument and you are set.
