Hi Jim,
In order for the wire to unlay like that it will need to grow
shorter, pin-to-pin, a slight amount.
My forestay looked similar to that when I replaced the gang 5 years
ago. It had two broken strands hiding under a Harken Mark I furler.

If you are replacing the forestay, you can do this when you drop
the unit for that. I'm assuming you're replacing it with another
swaged forestay or are you using a Norseman or NavTec compression
fitting? If a swaged eye, then you will have to disassemble the
furler completely. If you are going that way, just upgrade to the MKIV.
