I use 30 weight engine oil. The long tube part of the assembly is screwed on
to the motor housing and can be undone with a strap wrench without removing
the unit from the boat. I put the helm hard over to extend the ram, undo the
tube, slide it towards the quadrant, wipe off the exposed screw with a lint
free cloth and lightly oil the screw. Reassemble and that's it. Every few
years, if I happen to remember, I pull the whole unit, dismantle it and
replace the belt or anything that looks worn. One year the carriage and
recirculating balls got away on me. That was an exciting but annoying year.
Don't do that!
