OK. So since were listing names for Mark, I thought I would share the list of potential names my former Admiral and I developed when renaming Imzadi (formerly Scarlet Fever, which obviously needed to be changed.).
Sometimes the best name is inspired by an appropriate quotation. Before I get to my list, here is my favorite Boat Quote as a thought starter: There is more to sailing than ropes and winches, cleats and bulging sails. There are faraway places and the ever changing light, and the silence, and a great peace at the bottom of your soul. My list, including some names collected going back to 1994, when I bought my 25 mk1: Ultima Thule (Greek, the last unknown) Imzadi (Betazoid, beloved) Deanna Troi had been romantically involved with Will Riker before their service on the Enterprise - D, and used the term for him in private. To earn the honor of being someones Imzadi is the highest honor available for a person. Imzadis last past the grave, for all time. la Belle Aurore (French, beautiful light) The bar where Rick and Ilsa say goodbye in the movie Casablanca. Smart Woman (Jimmy Buffett, Hot Water) Im looking for a smart woman in a real short skirt, a smart woman who knows how to flirt, Not particularly politically correct, but almost a universal truth. Emerald Flash (Nautical term) A phenomenon of light and refraction that happens only rarely, and only on a tropical sea. An experience worth pursuing. Aeolus (The god of the winds from mythology) Astarte (Phoenician mythology) the morning and the evening star. She is the goddess of love and fertility. The Greeks worshipped her as Aphrodite, the Romans knew her as Venus. la Vie Dansant (Jimmy Buffet, French, the dancing life) apparently from a quotation the heart of life, dancing in front of me in the forms of thousands of colors and quiet faces Beach Music Undiscovered Country (Shakespeare, Hamlet V,1) But that the dread of something after death, The undiscovered country from whose bourn No traveler returns, puzzles the will, And makes us rather bear those ills we have Than fly to others that we know not of? Thus conscience does make cowards of us all; Distant Horizon, Far Horizon, New Horizon The ultimate goal for a sailor Even a common name can be romantic and unique if expressed in a foreign language. (Wind Dancer being the exception. I want to hail every boat I see called Wind Dancer and ask the duffus/skipper if he ever had an original thought in his head.) Anything in Portugese sounds romantic. Almost all have a story behind them. For example, my former Admiral suggested calling my new boat Nereus (the old man of the sea, from Greek mythology, Poseidons farther) because of my white hair and beard. Good luck, Mark, in finding the perfect name for your boat. Rick Brass Imzadi -1976 C&C 38 mk1 la Belle Aurore -1975 C&C 25 mk1 Washington, NC
