Paul,

I have one symmetrical and two asymmetrical sails for Cool Change.
The symmetrical is 3/4 oz, North Sails S2.
The Asymmetrical sails: one is 3/4 oz Hood and the other is a 1-1/2 oz narrow
cut sail, probably 20 years old.
Of the three, I like the 1-1/2 oz narrow cut sail the best. It may not be the
fastest but it is the most durable.
I use it with the race crew when we practice down wind sailing. I’ve had to
perform several repairs on the other two sails but not one repair on this old
A-sail. Believe it or not, this old sail has done quite well occasionally on
Beer Can races.

However, 95% of the time when we are racing, we set the NS/A2. The other 5% of
the time we set the Hood A-sail. (wind has to be just right) >From what you
have said, it looks like the sail maker is designing a sail for cruising. If I
were cruising, especially alone, I would opt for the 1-1/2 oz narrow cut
A-sail. Easy to set, easy to trim, works from 60 degrees to DDW, but not
necessarily the fastest sail available. We use a spinnaker pole on the tack or
a whisker pole on the clue when the boat is close to DDW. Works for us.

By the way, we set the Hood with a sock and the other two out of the forward
hatch.
