most of the modern browsers disable java by default.
I would update it and disable it (or uninstall). If you keep the old version, 
you are more vulnerable. 

make sure that you don’t allow installing any of the additional crapware (e.g. 
additional toolbars).

    I am still running windows xp sp3 and I recall reading somewhere to avoid 
Java updates because that might be a source of attack on machines using xp now 
that Microsoft has stopped supporting that operating system.  I like windows xp 
and I am familiar with using it after so many years: I don’t want to change yet 
but when my computer bites the dust. Right now it is more than adequate for my 
needs, fast and stable.  I continue to receive notices about Java updates but 
so far I have cancelled all without downloading.  Can anyone here advise on 
that…I am not sure why I need Java but I have Javascript…I do not believe these 
are the same
