Saw a suggestion in one of my books for birds but never tried it: 
It said to rig a fishing line about 2" higher than the spreader from mast to 
the shroud, and rig a line at mast top from windspeed sensor mast to windex 
mast, 2" above the mast top. Birds either trip on the line or avoid it.
