I did that and it worked for a while. The ospreys eventually figured out how to
break it ☹
Did I mention all ospreys must die a long and painful death? In case I forgot,
I think they need to be tied up and watch me make an omelet out of osprey eggs
before being staked out in the desert next to an ant hill and covered with
honey.
Not really – but damn if those things cannot make a HUGE mess and they are very
creative at getting around obstacles. The boat one mooring over had a nice new
wind instruments for about 3 days before a big fat osprey landed on them and
broke the mount right off.

I have monofilament lines running from shroud to shroud just above the
spreaders - work really well against cormorants. At the masthead my burger on
a pig stick keeps the "rats" away.

Others in my harbor use the nylon spikes.

Saw a suggestion in one of my books for birds but never tried it:
It said to rig a fishing line about 2" higher than the spreader from mast to
the shroud, and rig a line at mast top from windspeed sensor mast to windex
mast, 2" above the mast top. Birds either trip on the line or avoid it.

Does anyone know a good place to buy bird spikes for the top of the
spreaders? I saw someone putting them up and it looked like they had that
3M super industrial tape on them.
