That was kinda my point.  If there is a gap then exposing the underdeck is
recommended.  If there is very little or no gap, then one might be able to
sandwich the headliner between the backing plate and the underdeck without
any deformation at the perimeter of the backing plates

In the case of the Catalina I just did, there was little to no gap.  When
the fasteners were tightened, there was no deformation in the headliner.
Had there been a gap, I would have traced the shape of the plate and cut it
out with a vibrating saw and a Dremel at the corners.
