I use the offset from the transducer to the waterline. That way I read the actual depth of the water. My offset is about 20”. I can then match chart depth to the depth sounder and avoid going aground....or at least pull the throttle back so it’s a soft grounding!

This way, I can easily tell how much water is under the boat. Comparing the depth shown on the instrument with that charted depth always requires knowing the state of the tide.
