This same scam operates for website domain names. The actual cost of renewing our domain name is about the same for registering your boat. The last fake invoice that we received was for ten times that amount with the usual “no obligation to pay” proviso. I call it a “Stupid Tax”. I imagine all sort of certifications that must be renewed are targeted. Beauty Salon operators, for instance, or tattoo parlors. If you hurry, you could get in on the ground floor scamming the recently-legalized marijuana growers.
