I have a Ubiquity Bullet 2.4mhz titanium (IIRC). I have it connected to a wifi router which ties into the OpenPlotter. The router re-broadcasts the wifi internet to the boat's lan.
I have an 8 dbi weatherproof antenna. The Ubiquity is power over ethernet 24V (POE - 24). The most stable and max distance over the ethernet supply is achieved by providing max gauge, low loss ethernet cable and a 24v power supply for the injector. I bought a boost-buck variable p/s on ebay and the ubiquity recommended cable. I couldn't find the cable in shorter lengths so I decided to buy 1000 feet straight from Ubiquity. Its the ToughCABLE CARRIER. I'd be happy to sell custom lengths to anyone who is interested. I'm still discussing with the yard exactly where on the mast the antenna is going to be mounted. I prefer directly above the radar but they are pushing for top of the mast. Higher will give better performance but I'm concerned about being able to readily reach the antenna for service. 15 feet up is considerably easier than 50. You do have to consider that range is based on 2 things. One of which is your ability to transmit and receive. The other is their ability to transmit and receive. Just because you can shout really loud doesn't mean that the deaf man standing next to you can hear you. As others have mentioned general web surfing and video watching will probably be better served by some type of wifi option. That being said, my intent is to have boat data being constantly transmitted via MQTT so that any number of parameters can be monitored 24/7. I envision being able to anchor out, dinghy to shore, and be able to use my phone to monitor for intrusion, bilge alarm, anchor drag, turn on/off lights, maybe even open/close hatches. Well within the capabilities would also be video surveillance and alarm actuation. I can provide better/more detailed info on any of the products mentioned here.
