My vote is to leave the compass on the pedestal. These things can handle the cold. When I bought our boat in 2002, the compass had a bubble, so I took to a guy who replaced the fluid and seals. He said removing the compass was not needed. Cover the compass to protect from rain water getting under outer shell and possibly freezing inside where it could damage something. Charge your batteries, turn everything off and leave on boat too. Check your boat regularly through the winter and top off the charge once a month.
We get winter temps in single digits Fahrenheit, and sometimes below that.
