Hi Josh,
I had a bear of a coupling removal last fall on the project boat.
We did all the usual things first (heat, bolts
with strongback & socket, swearing, more swearing
& sweating). Lots of peering at it with lights and a mirror too.
Anyhow, got a Porta-Power rig from work with a
fabbed 4 bolt strongback (1/2" thick) and jacked
it off (with heat again). Found out we had missed
a set screw under the crud which was cleared up
with Emery cloth so it looked smooth. :)
I used mineral wool insulation to protect the
hull & sensitive areas form the torch flame.
Cheers, Russ

I think I could use a torch safely. I have ideas for that...Â

Heat. You don't want to use flame, I get
that. How about laying a BBQ charcoal lighter
on it? You could probably bend the thing to make more contact.

Getting the shaft out of the coupler is turning
out to be quite a trick. I'm using a large
socket in the center of the coupler to act as a
spacer. Then I'm using the coupler bolts to
act as clamps and draw tights against the
socket. I have lots of penetrating oil in
just about every location imaginable. All the
bolts are as tight as I can make them and I've
rotated the shaft multiple times to work
everything around. Then I used a hammer to
agitate it, still nothing. I simply can't get
the bolts tighter. The only thing I haven't
tried is heat. Got any other suggestions? Cross posted on FB.
Found this guy on YouTube. I hope it's not this big of a pain in the ass.
