* the ACR (or the Echo Charger) allows running all charging sources to a single bank. Without it, you have to charge each bank separately (or combined), or if you have that option, use a charge controller that would supply charge to two separate battery banks (e.g. Mornigstar Duo). * If you have your batteries set as “starting” and “house”, the general wisdom is to charge the House directly and the Start via the ACR. The reasoning behind is that the Start battery is hardly discharged at all. It is used only to start the engine and in normal circumstances, it should never go down below about 90% SOC. On the other hand, your House battery is regularly discharged quite deeply (all the way to 50% SOC) and is (usually) much larger (capacity-wise (Ah)) than Start. So this is the battery that needs charging in the first place. * Your ACR will ensure that once the voltage level is high enough, some of the charging current will go to the Start battery to bring it back to full charge. It is advisable, even with an ACR, to run all charging sources (shore charger, alternator and solar) to one bank. That being said, I never found a logical reason as to why, but everyone says you should. With that in mind, I’d run them all to the house bank to ensure everything keeps going (bilge pump, fridge, lights, etc.) and not the engine bank. The ACR will charge both anyway. That’s my $0.02.
