Another thought, Are the *bolts* stripped or the steel plate? Is it as easy as new bolts? I did an emergency repair on my old Atomic 4 once by just using one tap size up to re-tap a stripped hole in the block, that may also work if you can get the engine out of the way and have a straight vertical shot at it.
