Yes, I would have said Calliope Hummer, too. They remind me of cigars, with their rounded backs and short, stubby bodies. Their wings, when folded in rest, extend past their tails, they are so short. Last May, I took a photo and caused a bit of an uproar for how early the bird appeared in Huerfano County: http://ruralchatter.blogspot.com/2008/05/during-last-couple-of-days-ive-logged.html Another good trick, if you want to check out more photos, is to Google the bird after clicking 'Images' at the upper left of the Google home page. I got over 60,000 images: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=Calliope+Hummingbird&gbv=2 Beverly Jensen La Veta, CO

Several people suggested that it is a Black-Chinned and one suggested a Calliope. We had ruled those out because Sibley's pictures do not show the pronounced black stripe over the eye that's visible on our bird. Is it possible that that doesn't matter? We are neophytes and found reasons for rejecting every type in Sibley's and some other books because of one characteristic or another that didn't match. BTW, we are Stephanie Longo and Tom Pavlik (some people mentioned that we didn't provide our names in the posting....) --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ Join us at the 2009 Convention in Alamosa: http://cfo-link.org/convention/index.php You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group.
