one concern is the dog that has chronic (recurring) ear infections with a
thickening of the ear tissue accompanied by a smelly oozing discharge that
keeps recurring. This can be related to poor air circulation but is likely
a result of an allergic reaction. Dogs have mast cells in the ear canal
similar to those people have in their respiratory system. As a reaction to
an allergen such as food, fleas, aerial components and bacteria these cells
release histamine, prostaglandin and other inflammatory compounds. These
chemicals cause the mast cells to over secrete ear wax and other compounds.
Normal bacteria in this gooey warm environment to multiply and yeast takes
advantage of the situation to create a vicious combination of bacteria,
yeast and ear wax plus other secretions in the dogs ear. Your dog will need
your veterinarians help to fight this combination. Identifying the
underlying cause can be tricky.
