Not doomed to failure, but likely requiring a subclass of NSTextField or a 
custom cell class that does conditional override of the default behavior. 
Likely with a shared delegate or controller with your button to help 
coordinate. 

But if AppKit does this with internal state based on private API that is not 
affected by subclassing, then you are in for more pain. . 

Have you tried simply setting setEditable: and setSelectable: to NO?

If you track cursor entry into and out of another view or control, you could 
probably toggle these as appropriate.
