logging implementations who inherit from AbstractLog no longer rely on the external logging systems to manage log levels. this should make log levels work more reliably now (since i've written a unit test for log level enabling).
as well as the refactoring, i've done quite a lot of tidying. i've added doc comments, some basic unit testing and changed to the long form of the apache license.
