The original bug comes from a mis-thinking of the compareTo API being implemented. CompareTo throws NPE if the object passed in is null, but thats totally different to what the builder should do.
However, I'd like to get it fixed properly, and in a quick look a few days ago it was going to require a bit of thought ;-) So I didn't fix it. If we want it, I can take a look again.
