There was never any need for this feature. All use cases are fully handleable
within the context of XPath 1.0. This is a FAQ about XPath 1.0, and it should be
handled by answering the FAQ, not by failing to conform to the XPath 1.0
specification.  

You're right that we cannot go indefinitely closing and re-opening this bug; but
that's not what's been happening. The bug has been reopened once because it was
fixed incorrectly.  This report should have been resolved as Invalid or Wontfix
when it was first submitted. The "fix" should now be backed out, and then the
issue can be closed permanently.
