As population ages, Rohnert Park is poised to cultivate change
Even Rohnert Park, known for its commitment to playing fields, must adjust to
the changing demographics of Sonoma County. And so, Staff Writer Paul Payne
reported, the City Council will consider the conversion of small and under-used
parks to community gardens.

The change-over must be handled with care. No city wants to find itself without
enough places to play for future generations of youngsters.

While Rohnert Park studies the conversion of play areas to flower gardens, City
Council candidates in Petaluma are debating what their city can do to expand
the numbers of playing fields.

Still, it is not in doubt that an aging population will present many
challenges. Will health care and social services be up to the task? How can the
community promote work-force housing?

And what new recreation facilities can be provided for older residents?

With its longstanding commitment to public recreation, Rohnert Park once again
is positioned to provide answers.
