Then don't worry--Yellowjacket colonies get huge in fall but all the workers
die in the first frost. A few queens survive in leaf litter and such to
begin new colonies next year, but they won't re-use that nest.
(And don't worry about ground nesters in Spring; those are harmless,
highly beneficial native bees.)
And here we go--first time I disagree with Ken! Yes, these wasps are
beneficial--they eat lots of pest caterpillars (I'm not aware of them doing
much pollination, but I'm sure they do some).
But they are also highly aggressive stingers that can sting repeatedly
and enjoy doing so. Unlike bees, yellowjackets are a danger to anyone in
their area.
