oy. i have noticed that when you get an unexpected email titled only with 
someone's name, it is almost always bad news.

i met adam once but have enjoyed his posts here on the list so many times. i'm 
proud to have helped sweep during an open-garden event at the clinton community 
garden last fall. i showed up to tour the garden; then asked if i could help 
with anything that needed doing; and adam put a broom in my hand. 

if he is gone, new york has lost a true new yorker, full of stories, opinions, 
historical memories, and amazing information.
