I keep hearing this thing about Habitat for Humanity. What is this all
about? I have no idea. The only reference I have to Habitat was that
experiment a number of years ago with an enclosed system testing survival.
Thanks, Di

A few things you might consider doing:
* Use edible landscaping at the habitat houses in addition to having
traditional vegetable beds. Fruit trees are very pretty when they bloom.
Blueberries grow well there and provide a lot of fall color.
* If you don't already have some volunteers with permaculture training,
consider sending a couple of volunteers to a course and having some of the
especially good regional instructors do a course for volunteers and
Habitat
Families in your area. Some of the Habitat houses and grounds could be
the
designed as projects for the courses.
* Have garden training along with house care training.
* Develop some sample plans vegetable garden beds and rotations that
incorporate most of the Habitat Families favorite foods. Do additional
plans for additional local ethnic groups. Also make weekly to do lists so
people will know what needs doing in their gardens each week.
* If you have a traditional community garden for a Habitat neighborhood,
consider using some of the space to raise the edible trees, shrubs, and
perennials for future habitat houses. This can provide training for teens
or adults to work in the local nursery industry as well.
* Have a demonstration vegetable garden somewhere highly visible such as
at
a church or a school. Or if one of those can't be located at the start,
see
if one of the first couple of Habitat houses would enjoy having the demo
garden in their new yard.
