Our Community Garden at Howe Homestead has been in operation since the 1970s and was not under city operation when it began. We began our operation of the garden in the early 1990s. Because it is of long standing, we have some gardeners who were here before city staff. This has resulted in a steady operation which is helpful because the Ranger in charge of the garden has a historic site of 5 acres and an open space site of 1,000 acres to take care of. We need to make the garden pretty self operating except for fees, enforcement of rules and bringing in new gardeners in the spring. Our plots are 25 X 25 and rent for $100 for the full year because people can garden here year round. We have 49 plots and an estimated five year waiting list. Each garden is stand alone with fencing and gates and staff is responsible for maintaining the walkways between the plots and irrigation.
We are first come first served with the right to re-rent the plot the next year if you are in good standing. This encourages the year round upkeep and general maintenance of the plot because they can invest both their time and their money. We don't ask any of the questions that you have mentioned on the application but this information generally comes out in discussion with the Ranger when the prospective gardener has risen to the top of the waiting list. We have strict rules regarding herbicide and pesticide use -- none allowed and responsible watering. We average only two or three new gardeners each year and this has resulted in a very nice community building between the gardeners. To deal with our long waiting list we are looking at other possible areas of the Open Space that can be turned into our next community garden. We have assembled our waiver and by law packet, along with the actual application. Plots are 4'x24' and $25 yearly fee. since we will be functioning with partial capacity, thus a limited quantity of beds available, we have been discussing the selection process. We have built in some trigger questions in the application (ie. What do you plan on growing? Are you interested in participating in cg events? Are you willing to volunteer for a pantry garden?). So how does your selection process take place? Wee on a time crunch and would love input. The threw obvious choices are: Selection Based on willingness to participate within the community & need for those fringe low income families needed to grow food first come-first served basis Lottery Any help or input is appreciated!
