Fanless compacts should, obviously, be used 'sparingly' and never left
on when not in use.

FWIW, I understand there's a balance between minimising the effects of
the stress caused when a machine is turned on, and the 'electronic wear
and tear' while running. My totally semi-random guess would be that
after a few hours the latter outweighs the former.

Then there's the environmental impact - effects of power generation etc
etc - which to me says that machines should never be left on overnight
unless they're being used.
