what is the collective opinion on leaving compacts permanently on? i have my classic powered up 24 hrs a day (with screensaver!) - should i turn it off? --- Leaving a 128, 512 or Plus on all day should be regarded as a total no, no. Ignoring repairs, the most recent analog board/power supply in a Plus will be more than ten years old and the oldest will be approaching eighteen years. These original compacts have no cooling fans, the power supplies were always marginal and some of us have fond memories of them catching fire when new. Later compacts have better designed power supplies and cooling fans so they will stand being on for longer. But why do you need your Classic to be on for 24 hours? The additional usage will shorten its life (for example, a screensaver will minimise monitor burn-in of the Mac menu bar, but it will not prevent the monitor contrast and brightness from fading) and it will increase your electricity consumption for no return.
