I have heard that the checkerboard problem is due to bad connecting RAM SIMMs or connectors. Try getting the memory expansion out, resitting the SIMMs and placing it again. If it doesn't help, try disconnecting the cables that comes from teh analogue board to the motherboard and connecting them again. Probably this will fix the problem.
I don't think washing the motherboard is a good idea... Water can't do much harm when the thing is disconnected, but our fingers' static can do, and it's allways possible that we plug it again before it's completely dry, and we cause a short circuit :-( .
