could you not run OS 8 or 9 on this thing?

Nope, not a chance. New-world ROMs don't allow boot to any classic Mac OS. There has been many times I have wanted to boot to 9 on my iBook, but alas, it cannot be done.

Um, New World ROMs go back to the Beige G3 and Lombard which definitely can run OS 9. I don't know if it's that the ROMs in the latest machines can't or won't boot OS 9 or that OS 9 can't run on these machines.
