You're not old enough to remember the earliest graphics standards, then! While the CRT wasn't limited, the fact that you could only connect to the monitor using a FGH connector, and FGH only supported 256 colours meant that there was an effective limit.


Of course, a modern 1024 x 768 CRT can only display fewer than 800,000 different colours at once!
