As for the System version, one of the disks is System 2.0, Finder 4.1 (or
something close to that) and the other disk is a "brand-new" System 6.0.8
boot floppy I made using the System 6.0.8 Installer's "Minimal System
Software" option. Of course, the installer won't write to MFS disks so I
created it on an 800k floppy and then copied the files to the 400k disk I
wanted to use.
I would think that at least one of those System disks should work. They both, however, exhibit precisely the same symptoms. I know the 512k supports both system versions, so that *shouldn't* be the problem.
As far as I know, the Mac 512K does not support System disks above System 4.1 Finder 5.5. You are thinking of the Mac 512Ke, which is a different animal. By adding a "newer" [part no. 661-0345] 800K drive to a Mac 512K, you're not creating a Mac 512Ke. The Mac 512K has 64K ROMs while the Mac 512Ke has 128K ROMs.
So you're back to the System 2.0 Finder 4.1 disk. As far as I know, it should work. Pina doesn't say anything about it. Maybe there is something wrong with the format of your disk or some such. It is definitely possible to screw them up. After some trial and error, I now use a 4Mb SE with System 6.0.8 and Disk Copy 4.2 to handle 400K disk images, but a 4Mb Plus (with hard drive) would be just as smooth.
I'd try System 3.2 Finder 5.3 instead. It's the most robust and thoroughly tested of all the Mac 128K/512K operating systems, with the possible exception of the classic System 1.1 Finder 1.1g.
