But at the end of the day, do you REALLY love the old Macs because they
still work as well today as they did then? That you can still network them
today? Because they are so much better a computer experience than PCs?
I think it's much more intangible than that.
At university I studied computer science, and I concentrated in networking & operating systems. As with any good computer science student, I spent most of my time in Unix (and Unix-like) environments. I didn't work on Mac OS except one of my earliest programming classes, a Pascal programming class, using compact Macs (SEs I think). I think we used THINK Pascal, but I'm not totally certain.
As I mentioned before, I got into Macs after OS X, then I got interested in the OS's history and got an SE/30, with System 6 & System 7 floppies, and who-knows-what on the HD (I forget).
If I had to pick the greatest of the reasons I like my Compacts, it has to be the wonder of the OS that fits on a single floppy. Sure, MS-DOS 3 booted from a single floppy, but compared to Mac OS MS-DOS leaves a lot to be desired. That operating system, System 6 OS, was simply amazing: it was very easily networkable, it was resistant to user error (as long as you didn't pull "System" or "Finder" out of the System Folder), and it was very functional.
As a student of operating systems, I find System 6 (and 7, but mostly 6) simply amazing.
That the compacts can be networked to my modern systems makes it just that much cooler to me.
