Hey Jack,

Well, I can't really help you set this up, but I do have some comments on
this that may (or may not) be useful. I tried this once.

I have my PowerMac 6300 set up as an answering machine using the program
"MegaPhone". A while back I bought an Ethernet card for the PowerMac 6300
and wanted to install that in place of it's internal modem. Since the card
I bought was a CommSlot card (as was the internal modem) and not a PDS card,
I could only have one or the other, but not both. I obviously should have
gone for a PDS Ethernet card, but wasn't really thinking at the time.

Anyway, I still wanted to use one of my Macs as an anwering machine so I
decided on a Classic II running MacOS System 7.1 with an external modem.

I tried to install MegaPhone under 7.1, but apparently the extension it
needs requires 7.5 or above.

Luckily, I have an external hard drive attached to the Classic II in
addition to the internal one so I installed 7.5.3 on it and booted from
there.

Again, I tried installing MegaPhone, this time under 7.5.3. It installed,
but instead of complaining about the OS version, it told me that "You need
to have the Teleport [or somesuch] extension installed for MegaPhone to
operate correctly."

This is where my adventure ended. The extension was indeed installed, and
did indeed load on bootup. Try as I might, I never could get past this
error or even figure out why MegaPhone was blatantly lying to me. I
abandoned the project, and still to this day haven't installed that Ethernet
card in the 6300 until I find a way to turn one of my compacts into an
answering machine.

To cut a long story short, I don't think that MegaPhone is the way to go if
you have a compact Macintosh. :) I know of no other available software that
will act as an answering machine. Maybe somebody out there on the list
knows of one that we could try.

The one thing I *DO* know is that the modem in question needs to be
"Voice-compatible", I think it is. Not all of them are.

If anyone can recommend any other programs, I have an unused SE here that
would make a great dedicated answering machine.

-Nat
