I did it! With the help of a little guidance I found on this page...
http://www.mandrake.demon.co.uk/ ... I got my Classic II online on my home network - with a routed 4Mb Internet connection - from under System 6! Yay and verily even w00t! ...Gosh. You can't actually *do* very much, can you? Sys6 won't connect to my Beige G3 'cos it's running OS X 10.3.8, a too-new version of Appletalk. I have MacWWW ("Samba") but I can't think of a single webserver that Samba can open. It's HTTP 1.1 only - Google won't work, LowEndMac won't work, mandrake.demon.co.uk won't, even my own homepage won't. I haven't tried email yet as I don't really have a "sacrificial" email account, but I'll find one. I managed to Telnet into my online service - at http://www.cix.co.uk - and post a message in the Mac forum there, but that's about it. Still, a considerable warm glow of satisfaction, all the same. I'm now tempted to try changing the MacOS 7.6.1 install - which after /considerable/ grief I managed to move from the internal to an external hard disk - from OpenTransport, which everyone says is horribly slow on '030 machines and machines with little RAM (my Classic II is maxed out at 10MB) to MacTCP. No idea how to do that, yet. Hints welcome. I'm also considering finding yet another hard disk and trying System 7.0 or 7.1 on it. I found a page which said that "users of later versions of MacOS will find System 6 a little bare and stark" - boy, ain't that the truth! And "I've found System 7 to be only imperceptibly slower on these low-end machines, but it's a lot more capable in terms of Internet access and people used to later Macs will find it a lot more familiar." Getting System 6 going has been fun, but not much I want runs under it. Not even my own copy of MS Word 5.1a, which was installed on MacOS 8 or so. It opens on System 6 but any attempt to save or open a file causes it to "unexpectedly quit". I'm not sure there's anything I can actually /use/ it for... -- Liam Proven Home: http://welcome.to/liamsweb * Blog: http://lproven.livejournal.com AOL, Yahoo UK: liamproven * ICQ: 73187508 * MSN: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
