I'm now tempted to try changing the MacOS 7.6.1 install - which afterOpen Transport does have some quailties over Mactcp. Apart from being able to use dhcp addressing (not really needed) it does allow you to use newer versions of the Chooser/Appleshare which allows you input a server address as well as better compatibility with newer versions. As these options are not needed here I dont bother with Open Transport much, Mactpc is smaller in every way and was well supported in its day.

external hard disk - from OpenTransport, which everyone says is
horribly slow on '030 machines and machines with little RAM (my
Classic II is maxed out at 10MB) to MacTCP. No idea how to do that,
yet. Hints welcome.
Cant you install Mactpc and select between the two with the Network CP installed by one of them? Its been a while. If you have the 7.6.1 cd you can remove Open Transport or do it by hand.
OS7.1 has some avantages, you can use OT as well as many programs said to require 7.5 NS4.08 is a bad example on a 030 but a good one for the OS, it has the smallest footprint os any of the 7.x series, I've never used 7.0 so I discounted it.
Another option is to partition the boot disk and run both sys6 and OS7.x and change between the 2 at will. use the external for shared data - well you get the picture.
