First off, thank you to all who have given me eBay
advice. I've had to delay some of my auctions because
it looks like a few SE machines may be going under the
kinfe...

Secondly, I have a few questions about some compact
Mac curiosities that I've come across.

In a group of seven Classics, I decided I'd test them
on Speedometer just for statistical purposes. One of
them claimed it had a 256K ROM. The others all had
512Ks. There was no real speed difference, but
Classics are supposed to have 512K ROMs, right? The
256K one had a ROM disk (the command-option-x-o one
with 6.0.3) so that wasn't a difference. Some of the
Classics actually got beaten by an SE FDHD on
Speedometer...that isn't supposed to happen either,
right?

Yesterday I took a 20SC drive apart, expecting to find
a 20MB Quantum unit. I was shocked when I saw a big
Winchester drive (made by Seagate, who I don't think
Apple used as a supplier) sitting in there. Do 20SCs
usually have Winchesters in them, or was that some
kind of mod? I'll have to crack open my other 20SC
case, which I know was already modded at one time
because there is an 80MB drive in it.

Finally, has anyone else noticed that there are two
CRT suppliers for compacts? One is Samsung and one is
Clinton. They seem to be interchangeable, but the
Samsungs seem a little bluer to me. Maybe it's just my
eyes aging (sitting in front of computers all day ==
why I have glasses). It also seems that there are two
types of Classic analog boards, one that takes the
older SE/Plus monitors and one that takes the newer
Classic/Classic II monitors.

Hope someone can help with these questions that have
been nagging me for years.

Scott
