Originally because the entire CCD was compiled with gcc, as the
Studio compilers were not free at the time the CCD was created
(Solaris 8ish), and I felt that it would be nice if folks could
rebuild the bits if they wanted to using the gcc on the CCD.
Since then, I don't know, perhaps there's no reason to use gcc
anymore if Studio compiles it fine. Then again if there's no
improvement then why bother :) But feel free to investigate.
