The problem I'm having is when I change a channel either through the guide or the Tivo remote, the channel that it tries to change to is different. For example, if I try to change to 296 and I'm already on 249, Tivo tries to change to 2296 or 2 or 96.
I don't use this setup, but it seems that your problem may be in the IR transmitter/receiver... Let me get this straight:
Your TiVo tells your DirectTV receiver to change channels through the IR dongle (that you have positioned in front of your DirectTV receiver). The DirectTV receiver misunderstands the channel requested, and goes to the wrong channel (with a bouncing 721).
When you use your remote, are you using the TiVo remote the change channels on the DirectTV DVR? (Thus using the same faulty IR Transmit/recieve link)
Is there another IR device transmitting in the same room? (wireless headphones, palm pilot, TV remote stuck in a sofa cushion with a button pushed) Try sheilding the IR link from outside interferance with books, cardboard, etc., Try optimal placement of the IR transmitter about 18" in front and center of your DirectTV box.
