I can't speak for what your company does, but for my XP systems, I patch once per month for MS patches and then on an as needed basis for 3rd party app patches. Beyond that, I don't need to do much at all. The nice thing is that I can do all this centrally, whereas with my Macs I have to visit every machine individually to patch it.
