Thanks Tom. Based on the long report I got when I ran disk utility,
it appears that several program files are indeed scrambled. My new
external drives arrive tomorrow and as soon as I do a final back-up
of the laptop, I'll try the fixes you suggested.

Looks like you have disk drive problems. If you are lucky a quick
fix may make it all right again. If you are unlucky you have been
running with a bad drive for to long and various parts have become
scrambled. Hope for the best and try to fix it.
First try booting from the X.4 DVD and run Disk Utility from there.
That may fix it.
If that fails you need to get something stronger, like Disk
Warrior. This usually works. At the end of the Disk Warrior run you
should print out the report and review it carefully. You want to
see what was damaged. If you find that you have bunches of program
files that have been scrambled you may find it easier to format the
drive and start over. Usually it is just a disk structure problem,
that DW can fix very well.
