Robin,

This doesn't make any sense.  The only change with the debug version is 
that it prints out more stuff.  Unless we're dealing with some sort of 
race condition whereby the extra debug is enough of a timing shift to make 
the problem go away.

Can you try reverting back to the official Ubuntu version and see if the 
problem comes back?
